Students and Scholars Make Halloween Learning Fun

Student groups and classes brought high-quality academics into their celebrations of Halloween in creative ways as unique as their majors

Students, faculty and staff used Halloween to showcase their creative academic abilities, turning lessons into themed events that entertained people just as much as they educated them. Whether it was a professional student group or a class event, Kent's campus was filled with high-quality learning, collaboration and just a little bit of creepiness.

Public Relations Student Society of America

The Public Relations Student Society of America hosted its Halloween social event on October 21. The theme was Crisis Communications Nightmare on PR Street. Vice President of Membership Caitlyn Soya planned the event. Members and participants were encouraged to dress in costume to celebrate the festive Halloween season. Teams of PR students faced various crisis communication scenarios to which they were forced to analyze and respond. Then each group returned to share their ideas with the whole group, sparking great discussion among students. PRSSA is a pre-professional group that often holds social and networking events.

Chemistry and Biochemistry

91勛圖厙s chemistry department recently welcomed over 100 students and community members to the department for the 5th Annual Chem-O-Ween on Oct. 24. This event highlighted that STEM Fields can be fun too; it also marked the end of National Chemistry week. In addition, the event celebrated Mole Day, an unofficial holiday showcasing Avogadros number, a fundamental unit used in chemistry. They held a costume contest, hosted trivia games, passed out candy, and had fire and explosions. Various demos were displayed during the event, with a Halloween twist. Each year, Chem-O-Ween continues to grow and welcome more people.

School of Music

The School of Music's annual Boo-sicale program on Oct. 28, featured spooky renditions of songs from musicals ranging from The Addams Family to The Wiz. Students performing pieces wore costumes and competed for best overall performance and best costume in relation to their piece. The performances covered a multitude of emotions; lively, humorous and serious. Above all, students showed passion and dedication to their prepared pieces and made a lasting experience for attendees.

College of Aeronautics and Engineering

Students in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering got into the Halloween Spirit with sweet treats and festive fun on Oct. 30. Faculty, staff and students were encouraged to dress up and decorate their own wooden pumpkins to take home, creating a perfect keepsake for the season. Later in the day, you may have noticed a witch flying around campus. This was just a drone "defying gravity."

School of Fashion

The Fashion Fundamentals course analyses the business of fashion and how it is conceived, marketed, sold and consumed. This year, the students convened in the Schwartz Center on Oct. 31, to listen to a speaker, show off their costumes and have a party. Students used the knowledge they have learned in this course to dress up as their favorite characters to celebrate Halloween. A large group of students in the class dressed up as the characters from Shrek. Some dressed up as Snow White and Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries. Lots of talent and hard work went into creating these spookishly-good costumes.
